Our Cat Skiing and Patrol teams have been hard at work since the earlier storms this winter. We continue to reap the rewards of their efforts. Mirkwood is now open! We used a unique strategy for the ski area when we opened the mountain for the first time without Sleepy Hollow, we are also using a new tactic for opening Mirkwood this season.
Our avalanche mitigation work after the Thanksgiving storm flushed out Orcs, Mirkwood Bowl and much of East Trees. So, this terrain is still quite thin and not quite navigable yet. Therefore, we will be opening Mirkwood without the bowl for the first time ever! We often see this in East Trees during the early season, so nothing new here. Elation Ridge is also not quite there yet either with some thin areas and a South aspect. However, the north facing trees on the ridge in Mirkwood Trees and Staircase are quite good. Lodgeview and Southbound are also open for skiing and riding. Time to get your hike on!
