With the ski area closing soon, we will immediately turn all efforts to working on the No Name Basin terrain expansion. After consultation with the USFS and under careful consideration for public safety, we are CLOSING ALL UPHILL ACCESS to the public effective on Monday – April 14th. This will remain in place for the remainder of the spring season while snow is on the ground. We will post further updates on summer hiking access at a later date.
We will begin dozing snow off of our access roads immediately after closing. We aim to access the top terminal site for the No Name Basin lift as soon as possible as well as opening up other areas of the mountain for additional projects. This dozing work creates 6-8′ drop offs on the adjacent snow surface. These dozing efforts create areas where a skier/rider on the mountain could unknowingly ski off of these hazards. Additionally, we will be actively cutting and skidding trees to adjacent deck sites. Felling trees is inherently dangerous as is the skidding work itself.
In addition to the on-mountain work, we will have a very busy parking lot with several contractors arriving right after closing the mountain. This will include our lift manufacturer who will be setting up camp with materials and support efforts on the project.
Please allow our crews to focus on the task at hand and give us the time and space that we need this spring to get started on what is going to be a very busy off-season.
“But it’s my National Forest.” Yes, Monarch operates entirely on National Forest lands. However, we are allowed to manage uphill travel (and other policies) through our USFS permit and its annual operating plan for our permitted area. This includes closing the mountain to uphill access for administrative reasons and for public safety. Please refer to our policies tab on the safety page and the closures + mountain operations section on our uphill policy page on our website for more information. Uphill access will remain open as normal through closing day. We will be updating this page ahead of closing day to reflect these policy changes and springtime closures.
We strongly support uphill travel and have a very positive uphill policy. In addition to our love for uphill travel, I know that we are all excited for the No Name Basin expansion. Please support us in this effort to get the No Name Basin terrain expansion project underway for the 2025 construction season. We thank you in advance for your support.
