Track-Packing

We picked up 8″ of snow over the weekend.  With this latest snowfall, our Slope Maintenance crew was finally able to get some snowcats out on the mountain.  Our first strategy each season is to track pack the trails which helps to roughen up the snow surface and create micro-windrows that can help catch subsequent snowfall.  Compacting the snow layers also helps to encourage bonding between snow layers and reduce the faceting (weaking) process of the snow grains.  While this latest round was very helpful, we are still at least one significant storm away (or several consistent days of smaller snow events) away from getting the mountain open.  It looks like we have some snow in the forecast over the holiday weekend and into the first week of December.  Stay tuned and do your snow dance.
