Just to the north and east of the top tram terminal is the North Fooses Creek drainage. At the head of this stream where it reaches tree line lies the Gondola Bowl. This is a north facing slope that gathers a huge amount of snow during the winter months. It is prone to large avalanches each winter and any backcountry skiers in the area should give it a healthy dose of respect in the heart of winter. Beyond lie the three neighboring peaks from left to right of Pahlone Peak, Chipeta Mountain, and Mt Ouray. The peaks honor the legacy of a legendary Ute family. Chief Ouray was married to Chipeta and his son was Pahlone. In 2017, the summit of an unnamed peak properly became known as Chipeta Mountain to honor an important and historical woman. I highly encourage you to read more about her story and the efforts in appropriately naming this peak.
