Last week I had the opportunity to take a Wilderness First Responder class with Buena Vista Mountain Adventures. Traditional Medicine is centered around the idea that a patient can always be moved quickly to a higher level of care, but Wilderness Medicine starts with the idea that help is hours or even days away. There is a big focus on not only being prepared ahead of time but also being able to improvise and use the resources on hand to stabilize a patient until they can get to definitive care. For any outdoor enthusiast I highly recommend educating yourself before something happens rather than in reaction to something that you have already encountered. WFR and WFA (Wilderness First Aid) classes are great opportunities for any backcountry setting so go see Tommy and Ashley at BVMA or check out other opportunities in your area. Remember, you are never too old to go back to school (though I may date myself with this reference) so get out there and prepare yourself because you never know what you will encounter while enjoying the outdoors.
