It was the upside down world. In 24 seasons up here I’ve never seen a day where the only aerial lift we could run was Breezeway. Usually, this is always the first lift to be placed on wind hold. We had a peak gust of 64mph out of the NE at the top of Mirkwood right as we were trying to open lifts. The upslope winds affect the tops of our lifts in the exact opposite way of our almost relentless SW winds during the winter season. Throw in a wild drive up the mountain in the dark this morning along with some CDOT avalanche mitigation mid-day that closed down the highway for an hour and change and we had ourselves a day. However, we were able to open Pioneer lift which gave those of you who stuck it out a few hours of fresh pow in a new terrain pod for the day. Tomorrow should be a return to normal with the exception of some lingering wind drifted snow in some unusual spots. Keep your head on a swivel!
