Our snowcat operators have started the exploration process in No Name Basin. Thanks to BL and Chris for the photo from Wednesday’s mission. We are track-packing and even grooming some slopes as we discover what we can do on our newly cut trails.
This winter is all about determining…What can be free-groomed? What slopes require a winch cat? Where should winch anchors be built next summer? What slopes are wind loaded and which are susceptible to wind scour? Where do we need to build snow fences? Where should trail signs be located? We will also need to determine where rope lines and gates will be affixed. How will sweeps work next year? What will the hours of operation for the new lift be to allow enough time for early morning and late afternoon operations?
With all of this work in mind, it is imperative that any backcountry skiers in the area stay clear of any mechanical work occurring in No Name Basin. There may be active winching and snowcat work occurring at any time. Pay attention to warning signs for this type of activity. Users within NN Basin, must have a Monarch Uphill Pass valid for the 2024-25 winter season. This area is officially part of our USFS special use permitted area. Anyone accessing this area (or returning to the ski area), must use a designated exit point at the ski area. Ask Admin or Ski Patrol for direction to these designated exit point locations. It is about a 1000′ vertical foot climb out of No Name Basin with a backcountry (alpine touring / “skinning”) set-up. Anyone without this type of touring gear should wait until there is a lift ride out of NN Basin in 2025-26 as it would be a long, miserable, and potentially dangerous post-holing experience.
Reminder to all, It is illegal to duck a closure rope when leaving or returning to the ski area. Anyone caught doing so will lose ski area privileges for a substantial amount of time and may be subject to a fine of up to $1000 by the USFS Law Enforcement Officer. We have tried to provide some uphill/backcountry type opportunities in NN Basin this winter. If people can’t abide by the rules (and laws), we have the option to close this area all together. Please spread the word to the uphill community on how to keep this area accessible during the 2024-25 winter.
